You're basically right, of course. But sometimes you can throw out hypotheticals, like, what if your dear son, who you know to be a good person, told you he liked small boys? What would you do if you found yourself smitten? I've gotten some interesting results that way. In other words, an argument via emotion rather than pure reason.
