I believe you are right to feel afraid, among other feelings you might have. If you're living in the United States, you inhabit a country where guns outnumber people, where lists of pedophiles are published online, and the sort of opinions you've seen are coming to seem more and more common. It isn't alarmist to connect the dots, or to remember that genocide doesn't occur spontaneously but is discussed beforehand. This is what is being discussed: the genocide, or deliberate murder, of a cultural group. This doesn't mean our collective death is imminent, but that it is being chatted about with pleasure and menace by people who, to some extent, have the means (see above) to bring it about. There's a certain precariousness. |
