Christianity doesn't have such an "elsewhere," really: Christianity locates human individuality in the soul, which is the form of the body. The immortality of the soul implies, then, the immortality of the body. Unlike Buddhism, it does not resolve/dissolve lived existence into the One: it takes plurality seriously, and asserts the essentiality of the Other. I do not love you because you are in the end really me, but because you are really not me – and yet I could not be who I am without loving you. (All this from a thread on sexual fantasies!) |
