In the current context, bigots are already being made the bad guy. And youth are in the forefront of the movement. The stifling of youthful sexuality hasn't really been made an issue yet. There are, quite frankly, bigger fish to fry. Killer cops, which have ignited protest, are the tip of the iceberg. They're a symptom of much larger problems, which the major media have been downplaying and obfuscating for generations as the problems fester and metastasize. The concept of bigotry is going to have to expand into a concept of respect for fellow human beings. Either that, or things are just going to get worse for everyone. Perhaps, as this process plays out, respect for youth can be pushed forward. If the need can be established for greater respect for youth, that's half the battle. Of course, people have an infinite capacity for splitting hairs and drawing boundaries, including especially the boundaries surrounding any modicum of freedom for children and youth. So sexual freedom will pose a special problem. But sexual reality will be our biggest ally. Let's hope progress toward greater respect is made, and let's hope it ultimately includes greater respect for youth and for their friends and admirers. These are the goals I recommend folks work toward. sg -=- |
