I remember Gayle Rubin. And Pat Califia, before she abandoned us for reasons unknown to me. Those were the days when San Francisco truly was "sex-positive" a fact from which many of us took hope for our own future and for the future of the rest of the world. Gayle was terrific and it must be emphasized that there were surprising numbers of lesbians who once supported us. In all of my criticism of what became of feminism, i.e. in its most dominant and influential form, I absolutely recognize the bravery of those who stood up to our oppressors and wish that there were more of them. |
