Yes, but remember that those irrational, ignorant, literalist Bible interpreters were rightly concerned about social Darwinism and population control. "Survival of the fittest" doesn't sound like good Christian thinking, and it isn't. Nor is the theory of evolution exactly straightforward and intuitively obvious, and it had no grounding in genetics at the time. It sounded outlandish to a lot of people, including atheists. And let's not identify fundamentalists with Christianity as a whole. Fundamentalism really only began to emerge in the 16th century. Augustine and Saint Thomas scoffed at the notion of taking stories so obviously fabulous as the opening of Genesis "literally," and both of them would have eaten up Darwin's ideas!
