In the language of the 20th century, this story would be about (adult) prostitution, pimping, and pandering. And in a small minority of instances, about teenaged prostitution, pimping, and pandering.

Since the story, even in it's most outlandish versions, does not include any children, it is not about "child" trafficking, or "child" sex, or pedophilia strictly speaking. (Indeed, so far as I've seen, the large majority of alleged "victims" were over 18).

But yes, in 21st century language, child sex trafficking means giving money to a teenager for sex (often even including 18 and 19yo). Something that a substantial percentage of the world's men have done, with a substantial percentage of the world's teens, varying by region of course. It has been a common behavior probably for the entire existence of the human, and pre-human, species. The exchange of gifts for sex can be seen in non-human primates, thus it likely predates the use of language.

Attempts to stamp it out are as misguided as attempts to stamp out sexual intercourse in general would be -- or eating or drinking. It is a natural human behavior, and not only on the part of men, but also on the part of teenaged girls and boys.

Teenaged prostitution, like adult prostitution, is generally harmless except when it results in unintended pregnancy. Even then, the biggest harms result not from the pregnancy itself but from the economic desperation that often accompanies it (and in many cases the cultural exclusion resulting from hypocritical judgements), which is not inevitable as some would have you believe, but is the result of deliberate choices by policy makers who shape our economic systems. These same policy makers are directly responsible for the specific conditions that do more than anything else to foster a high prevalence of teenaged prostitution: child poverty, youth unemployment, expensive education, and low wages for workers in general.

It's sad that so few people bother to make this utterly elementary connection, and instead bloviate about "sexual predators" and such. When economic predators, the same ones that keep you slaving for a subsistence wage and would love to privatize your water system, are the culprits.

Just to be clear, I don't think the girls who flocked to the smell of Epstein's money were necessarily economically desperate. And I don't know to what degree any of them were really misled about what they were getting into. But it does seem to me they were looking for something that our society has denied them.

Peace and Love,

shy guy
