I've talked to several boys who were certain that because they were gay they were going to go to hell, and they were utterly miserable and also impervious to arguments to the effect that they were free not to believe any or all of that, and they were the only ones required to decide. Unfortunately they were so enmeshed in evangelical communities, with no contacts outside (except for people like me online), that it seemed overwhelmingly difficult to them to cope. So I see what you mean about it's being terrifyingly effective, kind of insidious and, I dare say, pernicious. Fundamentalism of any sort is bigoted by definition. |
