Some clinical psychologists/psychotherapists are terrific, but they're a minority. In my experience, most are clueless, insulated and intellectually incurious. Depending on where you live, you may have to do a lot of looking before you find a good one. B4U-Act has a list of questions it suggests that you ask your therapist. Don't be afraid to ask them. I suggest you establish to your own satisfaction that this person is competent and trustworthy before confiding anything in them. Otherwise, you should ask to be referred to someone with more experience. I would not necessarily assume that it "won't hurt to try" meeting with a psychologist. Some of us have had very damaging experiences with mental health professionals. They have a lot of power, and if you are vulnerable they can really mess you up.
