I remember the whole book was about a specific group there, and "Sambia" seems familiar (I read it back in the mid 90's).

There's a Wikipedia page that describes their boy-insemination rituals:

It's a really intriguing way of raising boys to become strong tribal warriors. I'd join their tribes if I could.
