Most places have exceptions - special events and such - but also have laws generally requiring that alcoholic beverages be hidden in public. This why winos have their bottle in a brown paper bag, for instance - if they didn't, they might get arrested. And of course Louisiana is famously tolerant of alcohol anyway.

Yes, it is a big deal. I have yet to find a truly free country in the world - it is just a matter of finding a jurisdiction that allows the particular freedoms that are most important to you.

Of course, the United States, for all its claims of free speech absolutism, has draconian laws against even the possession of certain types of pictures, of all things - to say nothing of the other impositions on liberty in the "land of the free".
