I saw that one at the cinema upon release, way back when. It can't be easy making a good musical that sits at the perfect point between being too saccharine and whatever the opposite would be. Some movies pull it off very well though.. usually with a bit of help from non-original music and song of course. Same tension-between-extremes for getting away with any risky messages too. Funny.. I was just thinking last night (again) about how best to filter the sort of people I'd want from those I wouldn't, if I were throwing together a micronation of any sort.. a similar conundrum to the one you've brought up in your post here. The question for me is how to advertise openly for the right people without being too openly explicit about what I want.. obvious enough to draw in the right people but discouraging teh wrong people, before being ready for the likely consequences of saying it more explicly later on. How to shape a culture with the right people, (almost) guaranteeing that the wrong sorts don't make it too far before becoming difficult to get rid of. Now.. where's my boiled lollie collection.. |
