I think it's because of a number of things...

...but mostly psychiatrists. I know someone who had memories of rape basically imprinted on their brain that they ended up suffering PTSD from, and then, when they found out it didn't actually happen, it was even more traumatic and they ended up attempting to commit suicide. Now they're doing better, but her life is in a pretty constant state of flux. The brain is a powerful organ. Goddamn.
