He didn't fall for that trick where they told him they needed a few extra minutes to prepare his fries. He just drove off because he realized that something was fishy about the situation. I think that he picked on that old dude for a couple reasons. (1) He knew he'd be easy to kill. (2) He figured the guy had already lived a full life, and it would be best to save him from falling into decrepitude. That old dude would've just died of natural causes in a few more years and been forgotten if no one had shot him. Now he's famous across the whole country, and everyone is talking about what a good man he was. He has brought glory to his family. Steve Stephens also didn't bother to shoot a bunch more people, because he knew he'd already accomplished his goal of being immortalized as the first Facebook shooter. He exercised restraint, only doing the minimum necessary to get his message out about how uncaring people are in this world, so that hopefully people would talk about these important issues.
