The purpose of the electoral college WAS to keep the balance between rural and urban areas. Presidential elections are separate state elections, whoever wins a particular state gets that state's electoral vote which decides who wins the presidency.

Those 3,000 votes Hillary had were in 4 counties of New York, (New York-Manhattan, Brooklyn-Kings, Queens, and Bronx counties...Trump won Staten Island), and 2 counties in California, (LA County and San Francisco County)

Frankly, the people in what lefties denigrate as "flyover country" don't want their presidents chosen by elitist progressive liberals in those cesspools of corruption and licentiousness. Trust the wisdom of the Framers, they gave us a republic instead of a democracy to prevent just such an urban elitist tyranny.

The EC has NOTHING to do with the perpetuation of slavery. In fact of the 39 men who signed the Constitution, only 6 were slave owners.....and two of them were deeply conflicted over the issue.
