I am pretty sure he did not use P2P. As far as I know, P2P do not use caching or proxy, and the most probable cause is that his router was caching his HTTP traffic.

A router is a computer, many use Linux, with all the tools and flexibility you can thing of.

As for the scrubbing software, only having it installed on his computer was enough to make him a suspect.
