I had a slightly different experience once in a hot tub.
There were some four, five year olds in the tub with me and I was admiring them intently. Someone asked me in a very friendly manner "are they yours?" My paternal/maternal instincts must have been all too obvious, if not indeed, more.
No malice evident at all, just an attempt at friendly talk, I think.
