I think it smooths the way if there's a candidate

or ballot measure. Newspapers or TV stations that want to support the candidate need not actually endorse him; they can just run a story about him. That's always going to help, since there's no such thing as bad publicity. In a competitive race between two major party candidates, an independent or third party candidate is always newsworthy, because people voting for him could tip the election.

It's harder to just run an article saying, "Is it time we reconsidered our views on pedophiles and adult-child sex?" without there being a current event to tie it to that makes such an interpretation obvious. If there's a candidate running, then the issue of reforming those laws is relevant because the voters are going to be faced with a decision, and all the media need do is quote him, without doing any research beyond that unless they want to. The candidate can be the one to present the research, so that it doesn't look like the media has an agenda.

The media can also ask the candidate's opponents about him, and the worst case scenario is that they decline to comment, which the media can note. Whenever someone declines to comment, it looks a little fishy.

Once you have mainstream candidates commenting on whether adult-child sex should be legalized, now we are beginning to move from Harris Mirkin's Phase I to Phase II. It is now becoming an issue that is open for debate. And if the pro-pedo candidate gets a surprisingly high number of votes, then that sends a clear message that the electorate is ready to consider this issue seriously.
