I think Tiberius (as described by Suetonius et al.) was a much more interesting - and even attractive - figure than Donald J. Trump. Tiberius was a man of great virtues and abilities tragically undermined by terrible vices and weaknesses. There's nothing tragic about Mr Trump, except possibly a pathetic, frustrated longing to be accepted by people of taste. Even his flaws - though innumerable - are minor and petty. It is disturbing that such an insignificant and inadequate person can be so dangerous. The twentieth century was full of superhuman monsters; now we have a not-quite-human man-child. Is this the only nightmare we deserve? I agree that he does show occasional flashes of paranoia, though. And I suspect that strain of his personality will become more pronounced over time. Maybe Trump will eventually develop some truly monstrous wickedness that will make him even slightly human. Here's hoping. |
