When Lady Godiva rode naked through Coventry in the 11th Century to protest the taxes levied by her husband, the Earl of Mercia, he decreed that the townspeople must remain indoors and shutter their windows.

One idiot tailor named Thomas failed to do so and took a good long look out of his shop window. He was promptly arrested and executed, and has gone down in history as "Peeping Tom".
