It made me think because I usually consider pedophilia to be an orientation, and since sexual orientations are a marker to differentiate people treat them differently. Right now there are only a few sexualities that are broadly recognized as "orientations", basically they all have to do with sex or gender. The word "orientation" simply means "preference" doesn't it? >>We have had some changes in what constitutes an "okay" orientation and what constitutes a "deviant" or "pathological" orientation (i.e., adult-adult homosexuality has now been pronounced "okay") but the boundaries between "okay" and "deviant" are being more ferociously policed and pathologized than ever. I wasn't around prior to the modern gay rights movement so I cannot say that things have gotten worse or better for sexual minorities in general pre modern gay rights movement. People treat so-called paraphiliacs like they're scum. I wish it was still as simple as "people have different tastes in things". But of course, it's not. It shouldn't matter so much. |
