The historical record also shows that attraction to children was seen as an appreciation of beauty. It's only recently that the idea of sexual orientation and the idea of pedophilia as a sexual orientation has come about. In the good old days everyone was assumed to be straight and if they did have sex with children it was seen as a moral failing rather than as an inevitable consequence of their innate sexuality.

Now everyone understands that pedophilia is an orientation and they assume that having sex with children is an inevitable consequence of that orientation. So we made it harder on ourselves by pushing the idea of pedophilia as a sexual orientation. Before, the nice man who liked kids was a bit weird but no one thought he had an innate and uncontrollable drive to have sex with children. Now that everyone recognizes pedophilia as a sexual orientation that same nice man is a threat merely because of his feelings. This is why it's not always good to demand recognition of sexual orientations. Sometimes it's better to stay in the closet.
