Modern scholars tend to be quite sceptical about Suetonius and his lurid stories about bad emperors doing disgraceful things. I don't think you'd find many modern biographies that take Suetonius' account of Tiberius' sexual vices at face-value. It is interesting that Suetonius evidently disapproved of this sort of carry-on (and assumed his audience would too), but primarily because it showed Tiberius' (allegedly) licentious and bestial character, not primarily because it involved children. |
