Freenet has been the choice for many a child-porn trader in recent times, but I think they are probably being rounded up by the piggies in large numbers lately. Freenet was always designed with unstoppable publishing as it's primary purpose (and works better when people keep their 'share' running as much as possible). I remember reading about it's origins while I was in prison over 14 years ago, but it was not originally designed for top-notch anonymity.. that was a later bolt-on feature, whereas I2P was designed with strong anonymity at it's core from the get-go. tpka Husky linked to a story about Freenet being cracked wide open last year: http://r2j4xiyckibnyd45.onion/messages/1461188.htm Also, one of my friends irl got raided a few months back after the police allege that they tracked a small bunch of files that he was grabbing through the Freenet network. ---------------------- I don't know what is currently available via I2P, but the content is bound to increase as (I hope) more people see the benefits of the stronger anonymity offered. I do keep reading that the I2P network is much smaller than the Tor network and it seems to be less well-known and understood by the public at large too, but Tor and I2P serve slightly different purposes and operate a little differently, with I2P seeming to be more cocooned and safer within it's network than Tor. Mind you, them pesky illegal drug marketplaces still appear to be operating with impunity while relying on Tor. Personally I wouldn't rely on that staying the case for too much longer. BC and affiliated chat boards could move to an I2P-based setting in the future as an alternative to Tor if at some point Tor was shown to be too risky.. just an option to keep in mind. As long as I2P doesn't get cracked wide open too, I was thinking I could set up a website or two there myself (maybe). I currently (tentatively) trust it more than Tor. |
