and the madness has spread to many (otherwise rational) folks.

Folks who don't know, don't understand, and don't even care about the costs to the minds, the bodies, and the souls of both boys and men alike.

A terrible price to pay as the result of panicking hordes fleeing from imaginary terrors.

Stampeding. Crushing the young under their cruel hoofs in their mad rush - to what?

To oblivion.
