I have not endorsed the Critical Mass concept. Things may eventually reach the point of outraged public reaction, but I suspect it will be at too high a cost, as you seem to suggest. Most likely the madness will continue until there are no resources nor money nor time left to squander on it. In much of Europe, the Inquisiton came to an end because the voice of Reason (a la Voltaire) eventually prevailed. But in Spain they just kept on burning heretics until they ran out of combustible material. Which model will prevail in the modern world and the present case I am not sure, but suspect the latter is at least as likely as the former. (The subject of this painting is not me.)
