The study doesn't surprise me in the least.

Americans, for the most part, would dismiss the results. It is about "the French". Frogs.

A constraint on displaying physical affection (i.e. banning touch) has profound effects, there no doubt about it.

I'd add Puritanism to your list. I remember reading about one of the groups of the first settlers to the east coast of the "New World". They left England to escape religious persecution.

One of the first laws they made in their new homeland? All other religious beliefs were outlawed! (Don't quote me - I forget the source of that info.)

Hypocrisy.

And the men who wrote the words, "All men are created equal..."?

Slave owners.

The Spanish were no better. The conquistadores went accompanied by priests. When the natives were "pacified", the priests took over.

The priests had the Bible, and the Indians had the land. The priests said to the Indian, "Now, let us bow our heads in prayer."

So, the did.

And when the prayers were finished, the Indians looked up again. And found that *they* had the Bible.

And the priests had all the land...

Ah! America!

Burn witches in Massachusetts. Wonderful sport. Read an interesting book about it. Salem witch trials.

Massacre the Indians.

Steal the West from the Spanish (who stole it from the Indian).

Letting William Randolph Hearst fan the flames of war (he is the one that made the unfounded claims that the Maine had been sunk by the Spanish). They got the Philippine Islands (and Cuba) out of it. The Filipinos were ecstatic. Until they discovered that the U.S. had no intention of granting them independence. Jose Rizal. The Spanish shot him in Lunetta park. Executed him, 1896. Two years before the U.S. stole the Philippines from Spain. Others carried on, and were totally dumbfounded at the actions of the Americans.

Only stepping into WWI when their economic interests were at stake (if I remember correctly).

Set the stage for WWII by placing horribly punitive reparations (along with the French, and the other winners of WWI) on the Germans, who rebelled against this by following a little Austrian guy with a funny mustache. He took them on a wild ride...

Letting markets run wild - until 1929 Black Friday.

Again, entering WWII when they saw their economic interests threatened.

Anyway, I'm rambling.

You get the idea.

And now, the new witch hunts...
